The food pyramid is designed to ensure that meals include recommended amounts of vitamins, nutrients and minerals. For example, by eating three to five servings of vegetables per day, two to four servings of fruits, two to three servings of meats and proteins, etc..., the average consumer can be reasonably assured that they are getting all of the vitamins and nutrients they need to promote and maintain a healthy body. A food nutritional chart provides more detailed information about the foods from the various groups recommended on the pyramid. Food nutritional charts typically show the number of calories in certain foods, the amounts of fats, carbohydrates, and sodium. These main categories are usually further broken down into subgroups, depending on the level of complexity of the food nutritional chart. For example, the amount of sugars and fiber is usually specified alongside the amount of total carbohydrate. This is because sugars and fiber have different effects on a person's blood glucose level, and the information may be needed by a person in order to correctly control blood sugar levels or dose the appropriate amount of medication. Fats are usually further broken down into saturated fats, unsaturated fats, and more recently, trans fats.
